What to Do in Panama City Beach When It Rains

You came to Panama City Beach for sunshine, white sand and the Gulf.

Then you wake up, look outside and see rain.

Don’t write off the entire day.

There are plenty of things to do in Panama City Beach when it rains, from interactive indoor attractions and escape rooms to bowling, roller skating and arcades. And because Gulf Coast weather can change, you may still have plenty of time to get back outside later.

But it’s also a good idea to have a rainy-day backup plan before you arrive.

Here are a few ways to make the most of a wet day in PCB.

Seeing rain in the forecast doesn’t necessarily mean you need to cancel everything you planned.

Weather along the Gulf Coast can change, particularly during the warmer months. A wet morning or afternoon doesn’t always mean the entire day will be a washout.

There is an important difference, however, between ordinary rain and dangerous weather.

If you hear thunder, see lightning or severe weather is approaching, head indoors. Don’t try to squeeze in a few more minutes on the beach or in the Gulf.

You should also continue paying attention to the beach warning flags. Rain stopping does not necessarily mean Gulf conditions are safe.

It’s pretty hard to miss the giant upside-down building on Front Beach Road.

WonderWorks Panama City Beach is one of PCB’s best-known indoor attractions and is an easy choice when your group needs something completely out of the weather.

Inside, you’ll find more than 100 hands-on exhibits spread across different interactive zones, along with experiences such as laser tag and an indoor ropes course.

It works particularly well for families because you can spend several hours inside instead of trying to move between different stops while it’s raining.

If the forecast calls for steady rain, this is one of those activities we’d consider planning ahead rather than waiting until everyone else has the same idea.

If your group wants something a little different from the typical arcade or indoor attraction, check out Fear at the Pier Haunted House and Royal Escape Rooms.

Fear at the Pier is a year-round walk-through haunted attraction with live actors, special effects, and plenty of opportunities to test who in your group is actually as brave as they claim to be.

If haunted houses aren’t your thing, Royal Escape Rooms offers a completely different challenge.

Your group gets 60 minutes to search for clues, solve puzzles, and work together to escape before time runs out. There are multiple themed rooms to choose from, making it a good option for families with older kids, couples, or groups of friends.

And unlike most of what you probably had planned for your beach vacation, neither activity requires sunshine.

Sometimes the simplest rainy-day plan is also one of the best.

Rock’it Lanes puts several activities under one roof, including bowling, roller skating, and a large arcade.

That makes it especially useful when you’re traveling with kids of different ages—or adults who still get a little too competitive over bowling.

Instead of trying to find one activity that everyone agrees on, your group has several options in the same place.

You can bowl a few games, head to the skating rink, spend some time in the arcade, or make an afternoon of it.

On a day when getting in and out of the car between rain showers doesn’t sound especially appealing, having everything under one roof is a definite advantage.

You probably know Race City for its go-karts and outdoor rides.

But there’s also a major indoor option hiding inside.

Race City has a 10,000-square-foot arcade filled with everything from racing games and newer arcade attractions to classics and ticket-redemption games.

That makes it a good rainy-day option even when the outdoor parts of the park aren’t cooperating with the weather.

Kids can compete for tickets, parents can rediscover games they haven’t played in years, and everyone gets a break from watching the radar.

And if the weather clears while you’re there, you may suddenly have a lot more of Race City available to explore.

Rain can also be a good excuse to stop trying to accomplish something for a couple of hours.

Have a long lunch. Order an appetizer. Talk about what everyone has enjoyed so far and decide what you want to do next.

Willy’s Pier Bar is an open-air area, so severe weather can affect the experience. If a storm is passing through, it’s always a good idea to check conditions before heading over.

And if the rain clears?

You’re already back at the beach.

This one probably won’t appear on many lists of the “Top Things to Do in Panama City Beach.”

We still recommend it.

Go back to the room.

Take a nap. Let younger kids rest. Play cards. Watch a movie. Sit on the balcony if conditions are safe. Give everybody a couple of hours without an itinerary.

Vacations can become surprisingly exhausting when you’re trying to make every minute count.

A few hours of rain may be the perfect excuse to slow down.

Then everyone is ready to go again when the weather improves.

This is where a little planning pays off.

If the weather clears at 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon, you still have a large part of the day left.

You could walk Russell-Fields City Pier, explore a local park, go out for dinner, find some live music or simply head back to the beach for sunset.

Instead of asking, “What are we going to do all day if it rains?” think of your plans in smaller pieces.

Morning: Pick an indoor attraction.

Lunch: Slow down and eat somewhere local.

Afternoon: Check the weather and beach cams again.

Evening: Decide from there.

That’s much easier than abandoning the entire day because you woke up to gray skies.

One final reminder: don’t let the desire to save a vacation day override common sense.

If there is lightning or thunder in the area, get off the beach and seek shelter indoors.

The same applies to Gulf conditions.

Always check the beach warning flags before entering the water, even if the storm has passed and the sun has come back out.

Explore WonderWorks. Brave a haunted house. See if your family can escape a locked room. Go bowling. Lace up some skates. Spend an afternoon chasing high scores in an arcade.

Or do absolutely nothing for a couple of hours.

Then check the sky again.

You may still end the day watching the sunset over the Gulf.
