First-Timer’s Guide to Panama City Beach, Florida

Planning your first vacation to Panama City Beach? Start with the beach, but don’t stop there. PCB has 27 miles of white-sand shoreline, more than 100 public beach access points, two state parks, family attractions, watersports, shopping, local restaurants, and events throughout the year.

If you’ve never been here before, a little planning can make your first PCB vacation much easier. As a Panama City Beach original that has welcomed visitors since 1984, we’ve put together a few things we think every first-time visitor should know.

Panama City Beach stretches for miles along Florida’s Gulf Coast, so where you stay can make a difference in how you experience your vacation.

You’ll hear locals refer to roads by both their official and familiar names. Front Beach Road runs closest to the Gulf through much of PCB, while Panama City Beach Parkway is often called Back Beach Road. Hutchison Boulevard is commonly called Middle Beach Road.

During busy vacation periods, traffic along the beach can move slowly. Give yourself extra travel time for dinner reservations, excursions, and attractions, especially during summer evenings.

One old local trick? Instead of traveling the entire distance on Front Beach Road, use Middle Beach or Panama City Beach Parkway to get closer to your destination before heading toward the Gulf. Even Visit Panama City Beach has highlighted this tip from locals.

One of the best things about PCB is that you can have a completely different beach experience depending on where you go.

There are more than 100 public beach access points, along with larger recreation areas and parks such as St. Andrews State Park and the areas surrounding PCB’s public piers.

Some stretches put you close to restaurants and attractions. Others give you more room to slow down and enjoy the Gulf.

If the beach is the main reason for your trip, try exploring more than the stretch directly outside your hotel or condo.

This may be the most important advice on this list.

Never assume Gulf conditions are safe just because the weather looks beautiful.

Panama City Beach uses a beach warning flag system:

• Green: Low hazard
• Yellow: Medium hazard
• Red: High hazard
• Double Red: Water closed to the public
• Purple: Dangerous marine life may be present

Conditions can change during the day, and the absence of a flag does not guarantee safe water. Always look at the official flags posted on the beach before entering the Gulf.

We love the beach (it’s literally our backyard) but Gulf weather and water conditions don’t always cooperate with vacation plans.

Build at least a few non-beach options into your trip.

PCB offers shopping and entertainment at Pier Park, arcades, bowling, indoor attractions, family entertainment, restaurants and plenty of other activities when you need a break from the sun or the weather changes.

A rainy afternoon doesn’t have to become a wasted vacation day.

A few rules surprise first-time visitors.

For example, glass is prohibited on the beach, and Panama City Beach’s Leave No Trace rules mean beach chairs, tents, umbrellas, coolers, and other personal belongings generally shouldn’t be left on the sandy beach overnight.

If you visit during March, be aware that alcohol is prohibited on the sandy beaches from March 1 through March 31, and additional rules can apply during designated high-impact periods.

Rules can change, so check the current information from the City of Panama City Beach before traveling.

Vacation meals are part of the experience, so try more than the places you recognize from home.

Panama City Beach has everything from Gulf seafood and Southern comfort food to beach bars, casual family restaurants, and waterfront dining.

Your first visit doesn’t need to include every boat tour, restaurant, attraction, and stretch of beach you saw before you left home.

Choose a few priorities and leave room for the things you discover after you arrive.

Some of the best vacation memories come from the afternoon when everyone decides to forget the schedule and stay on the beach another two hours.

Before you head to Panama City Beach:

• Check the weather forecast.
• Learn the beach flag system.
• Sign up for PCB flag alerts.
• Pack sunscreen and plenty of sun protection.
• Look up parking before visiting popular destinations.
• Keep a rainy-day activity in your back pocket.
• Check current beach rules.
• Give yourself extra driving time during peak season.
• Try at least one local restaurant.
• And don’t schedule your vacation so tightly that you forget you came here to relax.

Most importantly, enjoy it.
